Wakulla High’s James Daniel Sullivan Earns National Merit Scholarship to FSU

Wakulla High School 2018 graduate James “Daniel” Sullivan III has been named a National Merit Scholarship recipient in this prestigious program that awards scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and leadership qualities.

 

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 3,500 college-sponsored award recipients in the 63nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, whittled down from the 1.6 million seniors who originally entered the competition.

 

Three types of National Merit Scholarships can be offered depending on the student’s application and SAT scores.

 

There are 2,500 National Merit Scholarships awarded of $2,500 each; 1,000 corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships; and 4,000 college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists like Daniel who received a scholarship to Florida State University.

 

National Merit Scholars can receive up to as much as the entire payment for all four years of college.

 

Of those original 1.6 million juniors from last year, there were about 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists, like Daniel, who were named in the fall of their senior year.   

 

He continued as one of 16,000 National Merit Finalists due to his high SAT scores, his stellar academic history, and his leadership qualities such as being Drum Major of the WHS Band.  

 

Daniel showed an early affinity for math and science and started taking high school courses while in middle school. Excelling in Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment math, science, English and other courses, he graduated from WHS in 2018 already able to enter Florida State University as a junior.

 

Currently, he plans on earning a college degree in Theoretical Physics and continuing on with advanced degrees in the area of physics.

 

These National Merit scholarship recipients will join more than 330,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the National Merit Scholar title since its inception in 1955.

 

Adds Superintendent Bobby Pearce, “As one of our own who attended Wakulla Pre-K, Crawfordville Elementary, Wakulla Middle School, and graduated from Wakulla High School, we are so proud that Daniel has been named a National Merit Scholar and we look forward to following his college and career journey.”

 

Daniel is the son of Dan and Sue Sullivan.
