Wakulla High School junior Elizabeth Hughes was selected as one of four students to represent Talquin Electric Cooperative, Inc. at the 2018 NRECA (National Rural Electric Cooperative Association) National Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. this summer.
Talquin Electric Cooperative, Inc. representatives Maicel Green and Alisia Hounshell awarded Hughes at the April 16 School Board Meeting. Also in attendance was Talquin Board of Trustee David Miller, former Superintendent of Wakulla County Schools.
Sixteen rising young leaders from Gadsden, Leon, Liberty and Wakulla Counties were selected to participate in the Talquin Electric Youth Tour in February.
They were selected by Talquin based on scores for academics, leadership, public speaking skills and volunteer service in their schools and communities.
"From those sixteen, four were chosen to go on the national tour," said Superintendent Bobby Pearce. "Elizabeth is a great representative for Wakulla High School and all of Wakulla."
These delegates will travel to Washington D.C. this summer where they will join about 1,500 students from all over the United States. They will learn about the unique cooperative business model in a democratic government while visiting historic landmarks during the tour.
Students must have a close relative who is a Talquin Member in order to compete and must currently be a high school junior in the Talquin service area.
